Self esteem seems to be banded about and categorized in the same pigeon hole as self confidence. There is a massive difference between the two and while one is how you really feel about yourself on a deep and personal level, the other, I might add not always, is about what you portray to the world from the outside and can as easily be construed as a false persona.

So, if you are not even sure what it is, then how can you improve self esteem? Self esteem is what you really feel about yourself, on a deep conscious level. What you see in the mirror is vastly different to what others see in you. If you see a flaw in your makeup and suffer from a lack of self esteem, then what others see will mean very little to you.

You might be aware of how you look physically and while other people comment on how well you look, you have, over some length of time conditioned yourself to feel the way you do. Intellectually, you know you are bright, but there maybe was a time when you were criticised and it left an impression that is with you to this day.

Mixing with other people in public places is something that you might be self conscious about. You feel you are being looked at and it makes you feel uncomfortable. If it is a public bar or club, alcohol is sometimes used to take away this feeling and your confidence will rise. This, like the confidence itself is just a false illusion.

Now you are aware of a few of the common problems associated with a lack of self esteem, it is time to ask yourself, how can I improve self esteem on a deep conscious level to make me feel better about myself? You need to first start listening to people you trust and realize that what they see in you is maybe the true you. You have to believe in that person and start to feel good about yourself.

You know you have the intelligence to carry yourself and what has happened in your past has no resemblence to who you are today. Don’t live in the past and make the most of your talents and skills. There are those that are close to you that you can confide in and maybe share similar experiences.

Remember, to focus on yourself and not see yourself as a victim and that everybody is looking at you and disecting your every move. Unless they are people who are either friends or family, then they are probably not that interested in you and haven’t even noticed you! Don’t focus on what strangers might think and concentrate on how to improve self esteem even further, now that you are aware of it.

There are times in everybody’s life that we may suffer from little or no confidence. For some it can last for a few hours or days, while for others it can last for years and seem never ending. None of us are infallible and while the super confident seem just that, when life decides to take its course and deal us with a cruel twist of fate, even the most confident among us will feel some pain.

In most cases, it is not what happens to us as a result of little or no confidence, it is how we react to it that is going to prove to us that it doesn’t have to last forever. Don’t get me wrong, there are events in life that are hard to get over, but in time we have to try and must move on. We are built to cope with all eventualities, whether they be joyful or tragic.

We must always look to hope and a new tomorrow ultimately brings this. There are those among us who live in a life of despair and choose to do so, with little reason for it and there are people that are really hurting inside but make the decision to not let their feelings get in the way of life. While in both situations, there is a definite lack of little or no confidence, their attitudes are very different.

They are both deluding themselves and need to face up to their own personal situation. One is happy to live with the pretense of having little or no confidence, while the other is hiding their lack of little or no confidence, because they don’t want to face up to the hurt they are really feeling. In both cases, they have to face up to what makes them feel how they do and remedy the situation.

A good way to do this is get two pieces of paper, on one of them write down all the things that you are grateful for and want as a part of your life. Put it somewhere where you will see it everyday! On the other piece of paper, write down all the things that make you unhappy about your life and write down the mistakes and hurt that have happened in your life. Now scrunch it up and throw this piece of paper away! This is a statement of intent that you are letting go and what is in the past, stays in the past.

Now look forward to tomorrow and realize that little or no confidence doesn’t have to last forever.

Have you ever thought what it is that is stopping you from achieving all your dreams and why is it that you hear of people who are achieving and fulfilling their dreams every day of their lives. The majority of these people would you know it, live with the attitude of helping other people in every way that they can and the question that they ask themselves on a regular basis and one you should ask yourselves is “How can I increase my service today?” They hold to the realization that the more you give, the more you get!

I don’t mean by the above statement that you concentrate on what is coming to you, but in the end it does by natural recourse. The great Zig Ziglar summed it up eloquently when he said, “If you help enough people to get what they want, then you will receive everything that you want.” It seems that a lot of the really successful people on this planet are also the most generous. Do a bit of research and you will probably come to the same conclusion.

There are many ways to increase your service today and everyday. You could be providing it already and not even realize it. If you are helping people in any shape or form, then you are providing service. If you are meeting a need that is required, then you are providing a much needed service. While most of us are providing service, whether it be in the work that we do or otherwise, it is the person that increases that service and gives real value that is ultimately rewarded beyond reason.

If you increase your service today and add to it tomorrow and keep on adding great value to either your customer or your community, then the rewards that will come to you will be of great abundance and joy. If you are working for someone else, do you bring great value to your workplace or do you meander from start to finish, just glad when your work is done. Surely, you would feel better to take pride in what you are doing and receive the thanks that it would surely entail or if not, find another job or something that would make you happy to increase your service today.

To become the person you surely strive to be doesn’t take a lot and by becoming more and being more, the rewards that are on offer are inconceivable in relation to what value you may give and it all starts little by little by increasing your service today.

There is a misconception in most peoples' thoughts that success, in whatever form it appears, is achieved through a God given talent, a superior intelligence or just having the fortune to be lucky in life.

There is a misconception in most peoples’ thoughts that success, in whatever form it appears, is achieved through a God given talent, a superior intelligence or just having the fortune to be lucky in life. If only people realized that there is a science for success and it is available to anyone who seeks the knowledge to acquire it.

And that is where the problem lies, we are not taught in school how truly to become successful. We are taught in subjects that for most of our working life, we will rarely ever use and if we do, it is unlikely to benefit us to any great extent. Even our parents, unless they have an understanding of the science for success, will probably be conditioned by the same way of thinking as most of the majority of people do also.

We are conditioned at an early age to accept certain philosophies and one of them is unless you are lucky to be left an inheritance or in these days, one of the fortunate few to win the lottery, then you must accept the common teaching of getting a good education, that leads to a stable career and save enough for a comfortable retirement. We are told being wealthy and having the riches that this will provide is just fantasy and is reserved for only the elite.

Like everything else that is going to benefit us and provide us with abundance, the truth is hidden well away from the masses. As with any science, to achieve the results we seek for our ourselves, we must first find a formula that works and follow it to gain the desired end result. The science for success is no different and many before us have implemented it into their lives and found by following a given formula, true success is well within their grasp. There is no secret to this, only the understanding and educating of ourselves.

We must get away from the type of thinking that is going to restrict us in any way and be detrimental to our future success. It is in our own hands to find the personal success we all seek. The secret is to find it, utilise it and keep on educating ourselves to the possibilities that surround each human being. The science for success is not only for the chosen few but for anyone who has the drive and desire to put it into action.

Have you reached a place or stage in your life where you feel you have come to the end of the line of your own particular downward spiral? Do you feel there is no deeper to sink? It might seem at the moment like a desperate situation, but at least now there is only one way to go and that is up. I think we have all at some point in our lives been in a place where we feel trapped, isolated and unsure if we will ever get out of this uncomfortable situation.

We must first understand that it is only ourselves that can get us out of our own particular rut. Whether it be emotionally, financially, physically or otherwise. We can accept help and we might eventually need it, but only the person that finds themselves in this predicament can ultimately self improve their current situation.

We then have to look deep inside of ourselves of how we came to this point in our life and search back to what might have caused this deep sense of low self esteem, before we can move forward and take the steps to self improve our situation. What triggered these feelings? Have we put them to the back of our minds and even become in a state of self denial? Before we move forward, we must address all of these things.

When we have faced up to these facts head on, then we can focus on the rest of our lives and bring purpose to it. Before we started to feel the way we did, what things made us feel great about ourselves, what did we achieve, (whether it was big or small) and did we look forward to the future with hope. This is a time for reflection and without it, it can be difficult to move on.

For ourselves to then self improve our overall situation, we have to look around us, I mean really look around and be grateful for what we have and what we have not! No matter what situation we might find ourselves in, there is always room for gratitude. It has been said, that gratitude is the start of all riches and I don’t just mean monetary ones. We all have something to be grateful for and when we realize this, we can start to self improve our current situation and move on.

When we finally see what we have got and forget the past, then we can really focus and self improve our future. If we are working for someone else or even ourselves, think of new ideas to improve our environment, provide value to yourself and others around you. Bring passion to whatever you do and the benefits you will receive will surely self improve your current situation.

In whatever position we may find ourselves, we all have our own hopes and dreams. While for most these might be futile and just be fantasy, there is a small percentage out there who decide that this will become their reality. Not only do they see this as a possibility, they know without a shadow of doubt that it will become their destiny.

The kind of people who know this don’t live their life in a haphazard way. They have a definite plan and purpose, while to the contrary, the dreamers do not. They hope for chance and live their life as a gamble. What sets them apart is having a plan of purpose or what I would call “The Six Steps To Greatness”.

* To have an idea that will bring value to others and make a difference to a persons’ life. More often than not, it is usually something very simple or an improvement of another’s idea that offers even greater value.

* To visualise the idea in its completion. To see the end result of a goal in full technicolor. Draw the picture in your mind and even sketch it on paper. Feel it, see it and know that it will soon become your reality.

* To map out your plan. Figure out how you are going to achieve your goal. From your end result, work back on all the things you need to do to make it a reality. Write down all the goals that you will need to achieve to complete your task.

* Put down a deadline to when it will be completed. Don’t just let the goal drift and hope that you will achieve it some day. Attach a definite date and push yourself in completing it. Be realistic, but don’t make it too easy.

* Take action now! This is the most important and crucial part of all. Without this nothing has ever been achieved. Put time aside and whether it is one hour or six hours a day, don’t let anything distract you in this time. Give this time your full attention. Imagine two hours a day, five days a week (give yourself the weekend off) dedicated to your project. That is ten hours a week and forty hours a month! Imagine what you can achieve.

* And finally, as you complete all your goals along the way to your ultimate goal, don’t forget to treat yourself as a reward, as you complete them. This will keep you motivated and you will know you are a step closer to a better life. In life, you are either moving closer to your goals or away from them. With “The Six Steps To Greatness” within your grasp, you not only have the opportunity to move closer to immediate and short term goals, but to long term, never ending goals, throughout your life.

We as human beings should never stand still. we were not designed to and if we try to, we become stagnated both in energy and thought. We should always try to achieve and self develop our personal growth. It is within all of us to achieve anything that we want and also to manifest all the things that we don’t want.

All of us are influenced at a very young age, primarily from our parents and soon after from the friendships we make. We don’t seem to acquire the intuition that is required until later in life and therefore become followers rather than leaders. As we go through school, we are influenced and to a certain extent programmed to what others want us to think.

Instead of being shown on how to self develop our personal growth and learn the things that will take us further in life, we are given teachings that at best will give us some academic knowledge and at worst never be used. We should never stop growing and educating ourselves, but wouldn’t it be better to do it with the knowledge that it is going to lead us on a path to greater discovery?

We all have a mind of our own and a choice to use it in whatever way we choose. We can decide ourselves on which road we decide to take or let others decide for us instead. Our mind is more powerful than any computer in existence and there are no limits to what the power of the mind can accomplish. It is just that most of us are not open to the endless possibilities that can be created by using the six inches between our head.

We conform to influences that should not always be taken as gospel. Like any muscle, if you don’t stretch and use it, you will lose it. Your brain is also a muscle and a statement that comes to mind which makes it different is, “Once a mind that is stretched, can never return to it’s original state”. It is therefore important to feed it with the right quality information and knowledge, so to self develop our personal growth.

Do not put any limitations on your thought process and be very careful to who you listen to or what things influence you. Keep on moving towards the direction of greater knowledge and let your mind be a sponge for the infinite possibilities that await you.

Look at the options within your own life. Are there any areas where you feel unfulfilled or resentful? Are you in a career where you feel there is no possibility for progress or promotion? Do you feel you have a lot to offer? Is there a new career or challenge you would like to try?

Are you in a relationship that you feel is stagnant and going nowhere? Do you want your life to go in a new direction and you feel no longer appreciated? Isn’t it about time you turned things around and fulfilled all your hopes and dreams. Are you being influenced by people that are holding you back?

* Maybe it is time to find new friends and influences. Otherwise, you are always going to be stuck in the same old routine. As the saying goes, things will only change, when YOU decide to change! How are you going to succeed in finding and achieving your goals and dreams otherwise. By making this decision to change, it will inevitably help in building self esteem and your confidence will soar. Create your own destiny!

* A good way to notice the difference between overcoming your fears and achieving a better way of life is to get yourself a journal or a notepad. This is a place to put down your thoughts and achievements in writing. What goals do you want to achieve? What are the thoughts you are thinking at this moment in time? Do you have any great ideas that could change you as a person or make a difference to your overall life? Write everything down and carry it with you everywhere you go. You don’t want to miss a moment. You might come up with a great idea, but if you don’t get it down in writing, you might just forget it and it will be gone forever. By writing everything down, you will be able to recognize what you are doing wrong and change things for the better. It will be worth its weight in gold!

* Are you surrounded by mayhem and clutter in your life? This can definitely get you down and make you feel frustrated. Have you been meaning to do something about it, like tidying up a room, but something always gets in the way or you find an excuse to keep putting it off? Make a list of all the things you need to do that will make you feel better and energised. Pick out the one you have most been avoiding, just get on with it and complete it. You will feel a lot better for it and it will inspire you to tackle those ‘hard to get motivated about’ jobs much easier and invariably help in building self esteem.

It might be the call you know you should make or the room you need to tidy. Whatever it is, once it is completed you will feel like a great weight has been lifted and your confidence to achieve will reach new heights.

Why do we treat ourselves the way we do? We often treat others much better than ourselves. We deserve a little pampering sometimes, but why don’t we do it more often? Buy yourself some fresh cut flowers, unless someone gets them for you on a regular basis. Take yourself to the hairdressers and make yourself look a million dollars.

We all have the right to feel more confident and yet we choose to do things to the contrary. We seem to go for the short term fix, instead of the long term benefit. We can all feel more confident and good if we only we choose to do so. It is all a question of knowing how to go about it!

Why do we abuse our bodies and keep putting junk into it more often than we should? The same could be said about the rubbish we fill our heads with, when there is so much quality to be absorbed. There are many things that are good for our bodies, yet we seem to indulge in the wrong types of food and drink much too regularly and disregard what is good for us.

There is nothing wrong with the occasional treat, but moderation is the key. No wonder we have a lack of self esteem. Treat yourself often, but only if you feel the pleasure from it. Set yourself small tasks and goals and when you achieve them, then and only then, treat yourself. This will promote an healthy sense of esteem and make you feel a lot more confident.

Everybody has someone they look up to, want to be like. Try to mirror them and one day hope to be just like them. Whether or not everybody’s idea of that image is a good or bad role model, we all need someone to look up to and feel more confident. A person we admire, who inspires and ultimately influences us to be a person of high integrity and someone who will inspire others.

Maybe there was a time in your life when you had all the attributes of the person you are now looking up to. Did you have the confidence, authority and people skills that you now crave for? If not, there is always someone out there in whatever field you are interested in and hope to be a part of, that can help, encourage and prevent you making the same mistakes they made, that will enable you to feel more confident, gain and ultimately build your own self esteem.

An area of insecurity that is common and relevant in overcoming low self esteem is when someone becomes defensive when another is finding fault with them. Instead of getting upset, why not show your maturity and if what they are saying is a known truth to you, then take their advice and show your gratitude in the fact that they have noticed any of your shortcomings. Then make a positive and mature stance to rectify what is holding you back.

This will show whoever that you are a mature and self-assured person who can accept criticism without offence. If what they are saying is an untruth, then why get upset over something you know to be a lie.

Two of the most destructive and negative emotions that people have when overcoming low self esteem are possessiveness and jealousy. To think that you need to keep a partner on a leach and object to them being their own, independent person is just showing how insecure you really are.

Being jealous of a friend or a partner talking to others or achieving goals that you may also crave is just another way of showing just how inferior you have become and how you feel about yourself.

In all walks of life and in every person you might meet, there is one emotion that we all feel and fear and that is rejection. You have to be strong to realise that you are your own person and one not to be intimidated by another persons expectation of you.

Being rejected is all part of growing up. Whether it be academically at school, meeting future suitors or when we move into the business world. Sometimes, we have to move away from our present circle of influence and circumstances to realise that we have moved on. Handling rejection is always difficult, but we must always have an inner belief of ourselves that this will lead to our overall success.

In the same way that someone makes a nice remark about you that is very complimentary, if you are in the process of overcoming low self esteem in the area that they are complimenting you on, you will either think it is a lie or that they are just humouring you and being polite.

There are others who never take part in all hosts of events and activities. The obstacles in overcoming low self esteem are so great that they feel that if they take part in sports, auditions, public speaking and various other things, they believe that they will come last, be ridiculed, never be selected to take part and not feel part of any team.

Because of this, they miss an opportunity to overcome their inferiority and gain much needed confidence. They are too withdrawn within themselves about what others are thinking, instead of just living their lives and being more carefree in their attitudes.
